The Battle of Metz was a battle fought during World War II at the city of Metz, France, from late September 1944 through mid-December between the U.S. Third Army commanded by Lieutenant General George Patton and the German Army commanded by General Otto von Knobelsdorff. Strong German resistance resulted in heavy casualties for both sides.

The basilica of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains is a pre-medieval church building in Metz, France. It began life as a Roman "gymnasium", or secondary school, in the 4th century AD, making it one of the oldest churches in Europe.The building was originally built in 380 AD as part of a Roman spa complex. In the 7th century, the structure was converted into a church, becoming the chapel of a Benedictine nunnery.

They were unsuccessful and were driven back into the city with a loss of 1,193 soldiers and 64 officers.

The Abbey of Saint-Arnould, St. Arnold,Saint-Arnoult or Abbey of the Holy Apostles is a Benedictine abbey residing in Metz since the 6th century.The origins of the abbey are a mystery. According to legend, it was founded in the 2nd century by Bishop Patient Metz as the Basilica of St. John Evangelist.

The Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole is a 750-seat opera house and theatre located on the Petit-Saulcy island in Metz, capital of the Lorraine region, France. It is the oldest opera house working in France and one of the oldest in Europe. It is also one of the last possessing its own costume ateliers in France.
