The stadium is named after Sukarno, Indonesia's first President.

Opened in December 1961, it was used as the venue for 1962 Asian Games hockey event, during which it was known as Senayan Hockey Stadium or Senayan Open Stadium (Indonesian: Stadion Terbuka Senayan).
