Kokura

Kokura (小倉市, Kokura-shi) is an ancient castle town and the center of Kitakyushu, Japan, guarding the Straits of Shimonoseki between Honshu and Kyushu with its suburb Moji. Kokura is also the name of the penultimate station on the southbound San'yō Shinkansen line, which is owned by JR West. Ferries connect Kokura with Matsuyama on Shikoku, and Busan in South Korea.

Kokura Castle

Kokura Castle (小倉城, Kokura-jō) in Kitakyushu, Japan was built by Hosokawa Tadaoki in 1602. It was the property of the Ogasawara clan (from Harima) between 1632 and 1860. The castle burnt down from a fire in 1837, with parts of it rebuilt in 1839. The castle burnt down again in 1866 during the war between the Kokura and Chōshū clans.

JR Kyūshū's Kokura Station is the main rail hub of Kitakyūshū, and the Sanyō Shinkansen stops there.It has a population of 184,545 persons as of the 2000 national census and an area of 39.27 km².
