Houten (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦʌutə(n)] (listen)) is a municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht.

Fectio, known as Vechten in Old Dutch, was a Roman castellum in the province Germania Inferior established in the year 4 or 5 AD. It was located at the place where the river Vecht (Fectio) branched off from the Rhine, leading to Lake Flevo, which was later to become the Zuiderzee. This was near the modern hamlet of Vechten in the municipality Bunnik, Utrecht, Netherlands.

Houten is a railway station located in Houten, Netherlands. The station was opened on 1 November 1868 and is located on the Utrecht–Boxtel railway and the Houten - Houten Castellum tram line which closed on 14 December 2008. The services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. The station was closed between 1935 and 1982.

Oud-Wulven (52°03′N 5°09′E) is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located just north of the village of Houten, and is part of that municipality.Oud-Wulven was originally a heerlijkheid (fiefdom). In 1545 it was combined with the neighbouring heerlijkheid Waaijen. "Oud-Wulven en Waaijen" remained a separate entity until 1811, when it merged into Houten.

Utrecht Lunetten is a railway station located in Utrecht, Netherlands. The station originally opened on 10 June 1874 and is located on the Utrecht–Boxtel railway and the Hilversum–Lunetten railway (via Utrecht Maliebaan). The station closed on 15 May 1932. The station was re-opened on 25 September 1980.

Tolsteeg is a neighbourhood in the south of the Dutch city of Utrecht.Tolsteeg was a separate municipality between 1818 and 1823, when it was merged with Utrecht.

Oog in Al is a residential area in the west of the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam–Rhine Canal, the Merwede Canal and the Leidse Rijn canal form the area's limits, rendering it a man-made island in the shape of a triangle.From the 12th century, the area of present-day Oog in Al was part of the 'Trechter Weide', the communal meadow of the city of Utrecht.

On the morning of 18 March 2019, three people were killed and seven others injured in a mass shooting on a tram in Utrecht, Netherlands. One of the injured died of his injuries ten days later. Local police said the incident appeared to be a terrorist attack, although this is yet to be confirmed. The suspect, a 37-year-old Turkish man, was arrested later that day following a major security operation and manhunt.

Lunetten is a neighbourhood in the southeastern part of the city of Utrecht, that has approximately 12.000 inhabitants. It is mainly a residential area, since there is no significant industry present. Lunetten was constructed as an urban experiment mostly during the late 1970s and 1980s. It was designed and planned by a combination of students of architecture and urban planning and the then foreseen future inhabitants.

Kanaleneiland is a district within the Southwest section of the Dutch city of Utrecht. It was created in the massive expansion of the city in the 1960s. It was listed (in 2005) as one of 40 "problem neighborhoods" that required extra attention by the Dutch Ministry of Housing.Kanaleneiland's residents have low levels of employment, health, and education.
