Hong Kong Island (Chinese: 香港島; Cantonese Yale: Hēunggóng dóu) is an island in the southern part of Hong Kong. It has a population of 1,289,500 and its population density is 16,390/km², as of 2008. The island had a population of about 3,000 inhabitants scattered in a dozen fishing villages when it was occupied by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in the First Opium War (1839-1842).

The Battle of Hong Kong (8–25 December 1941), also known as the Defence of Hong Kong and the Fall of Hong Kong, was one of the first battles of the Pacific War in World War II. On the same morning as the attack on Pearl Harbor, forces of the Empire of Japan attacked the British Crown colony of Hong Kong.

Highcliff (Chinese: 曉廬; Cantonese Yale: Híulòuh) is a 252.4-metre (828-foot) tall skyscraper located on a south slope of Happy Valley on the Hong Kong Island in Hong Kong. The 75 storey (70 floors of which are liveable space) building's construction began in 2000 and was completed in 2003 under a design by DLN Architects & Engineers.

Marymount Secondary School (Abbreviation: MSS; Chinese: 瑪利曼中學; Demonym: Marymountian) is a prestigious Band 1 all-girls EMI Roman Catholic Secondary School located in Happy Valley, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. The Primary School is Marymount Primary School. Marymount is notable for its progressive values and for its decorated school choir, which has contended for and won numerous international titles.

Tung Lin Kok Yuen (Chinese: 東蓮覺苑) is a Buddhist nunnery and educational institution located at No.15 Shan Kwong Road in Happy Valley, Hong Kong. Founded in 1935 by Lady Clara Ho-Tung, it is home to approximately 30 nuns and 50 lay devotees.It is the only seminary for Buddhist nuns in Hong Kong and provides an 8-year curricular program in Mahayana Buddhism.
