Kostroma

Kostroma (Russian: Кострома, IPA: [kəstrɐˈma]) is a historic city and the administrative center of Kostroma Oblast, Russia. A part of the Golden Ring of Russian towns, it is located at the confluence of the Volga and Kostroma Rivers. Population: 268,742 (2010 Census); 278,750 (2002 Census); 278,414 (1989 Census).

Kostroma Governorate (Russian: Орловская губерния, Kostromskaya guberniya) was an administrative division (a guberniya) of the Russian Empire and the Russian SFSR, which existed from 1796 to 1929. Its administrative center was in the city of Kostroma.

The Gostiny Dvor in Kostroma is the best preserved complex of provincial Neoclassical trading arcades in Russia. It was built on the site of the ancient Kostroma kremlin after the great fire of 1773. The complex comprises more than ten buildings constructed over a period of almost five decades. The merchant court was designed by Charles Claire, although many other architects (including Vasily Stasov) modified the original design.

Kostromskoy District (Russian: Костромско́й райо́н) is an administrative and municipal district (raion), one of the twenty-four in Kostroma Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southwest of the oblast. The area of the district is 2,032 square kilometers (785 sq mi). Its administrative center is the city of Kostroma (which is not administratively a part of the district).
