Newton Heath is an area of Manchester, England, 2.8 miles (4.5 km) north-east of Manchester city centre and with a population of 9,883.Historically part of Lancashire, Newton Heath was formerly a farming area, but adopted the factory system following the Industrial Revolution. The principal industry in the area was engineering, although many were employed in the mining and textiles industries in the thriving areas of Clayton Vale and Bradford.

The stop is the partial replacement of Dean Lane railway station which was closed in 2009 to enable conversion of the Oldham Loop Line to Metrolink services with the station opening on 13 June 2012.

Dean Lane railway station opened on 17 May 1880 and served Newton Heath, Manchester, England. The station was on the Oldham Loop Line 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) north east of Manchester Victoria and was operated and managed by Northern. There were once three stations in Newton Heath: Newton Heath, Dean Lane and Park.
