The Maldives Islands are formed by 20 natural atolls, along with a few islands and isolated reefs today which form a pattern stretching from 7 degrees 10′ North to 0 degrees 45′ South. The largest of these atolls is Boduthiladhunmathi, while the atoll containing the most islands is Huvadhu.Some atolls are in the form of a number of islands by time and in the form of isolated reefs, which could be classified as smaller atoll formations.

On 6 May 2021, an assassination attempt was made against Maldivian Speaker of the People's Majlis and former president Mohamed Nasheed near his home in Malé. At 20:39 MVT (UTC+5), a homemade explosive device planted on a parked motorcycle exploded, injuring Nasheed and four others. Maldives authorities alleges it to be a terrorist attack by religious 'extremists'.

Aminiya School is a primary and secondary school in Malé, the capital of the Maldives. It was the first girls' secondary school in the country and remained the only all-girls school until 14 June 2011.

Al Madhrasathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya (Arabic: المدرسة العربية الاسلامية, Dhivehi: އަލް މަދްރަސަތުލް ޢަރަބިއްޔަތުލް އަސްލާމިއްޔާ), more commonly known as Arabiyya School (Dhivehi: ޢަރަބިއްޔާ ސްކޫލް), is the first and only Arabic Islamic school in the Maldives, educating students from primary to upper secondary grades.

Centre for Higher Secondary Education Malé (Dhivehi: ސެންޓަރ ފޮރ ހަޔަރ ސެކަންޑަރީ އެޑިޔުކޭޝަން މާލެ), more commonly known as CHSE-Malé (Dhivehi: ސީއެޗްއެސްއީ މާލެ), is a government run Higher Secondary school in Malé, Maldives, which caters only to A' level students. CHSE was inaugurated on 3 July 1979, under the name of the Science Education Centre, or SEC, with the aim of producing students qualified enough to enter universities abroad.

Malé is the capital and most populous city of the Maldives. With a population of 211,908 in 2022 within its administrative area and coterminous geographical area of 8.30 square kilometres (3.20 sq mi), Malé is also one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The city is geographically located in the southern edge of North Malé Atoll (Kaafu Atoll).

Iskandhar School is a government-run public school in Malé, Maldives. It was founded on 10 May 1961, under the name of Hameediyya Montessori School. The school currently has over 2000 students and over 130 teachers. It is one of the oldest educational institutions in the Maldives.

The Chinese ambassador in Malé is the official representative of the Government in Beijing to the Government of the Maldives.

Mandhu College (formerly Mandhu Learning Centre) is a private college providing Higher Education in the Maldives. Mandhu College collaborates with universities in UK and Australia to provide accredited tertiary courses locally. The Mandhu Learning Centre was established in 1998, and later inaugurated as the Mandhu College in December 2009.

Established on the National Day of the Maldives, the first National Museum of the country was opened on 11 November 1952, by the Prime Minister at the time, Mohamed Amin Didi.
