Mersea Island coast walk Introduction

Mersea Island coast walk is a 9.6 mile (22,000-step) route located near West Mersea, Colchester, England. This route has an elevation gain of about 127.9 ft and is rated as medium. Find the best walking trails near you in Pacer App.
The start heading east along the south of the island you pass various caravan sites and the country park which is well worth stopping at, as past this there are no toilet facilities. In hindsight we should have gone clockwise round, then I might have finished the whole route, although my companions did.

Mersea Island

Mersea Island is an island in Essex, England, in the Blackwater and Colne estuaries to the south-east of Colchester. Its name comes from the Old English word meresig, meaning "island of the pool" and thus is tautological. The island is split into two main areas, West Mersea and East Mersea, and connected to the mainland by the Strood, a causeway that can flood at high tide.

The hamlet is 33 km (21 mi) east-northeast of the county town, Chelmsford. Barrow Hill is in the borough of Colchester and in the parliamentary constituency of North Essex.

It formed part of the King's Device programme to protect against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire, and defended the River Colne that led to the town of Colchester.

The smaller settlement on the island is the village of East Mersea.As well as West Mersea Yacht Club, it also has an RNLI lifeboat station.
