Historically a part of Lancashire, it is close to Astley, Mosley Common and Walkden, by the East Lancashire Road.

The pit was located on Manchester Road, a short distance south of Walkden town centre.There were three shafts on the colliery site, with a fourth upcast shaft located a distance to the NNW. No. 1 shaft was sunk to the Five Quarters mine at a depth of 252 metres (276 yd).

Monton Mill was a cotton spinning mill in Eccles, Greater Manchester, England, built in 1906. It was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in the 1930s and passed to Courtaulds in 1964. Production finished, it was demolished but its name is preserved in the street name.
