It was the first WGC-HSBC Champions tournament, and the fourth of four World Golf Championships events held in 2009.Phil Mickelson won the tournament, and claimed his second World Golf Championships title of the year and for his career.

Bubba Watson won the tournament at the first playoff hole, holing a 20-foot (6 m) putt for a birdie at the 18th hole while Tim Clark took a par 5.

Sheshan, formerly known as Zose, is a pair of hills in Songjiang District in western Shanghai, China. The two hills are distinguished as East and West Sheshan, although the more important western hill is also called Sheshan on its own. East Sheshan has an elevation of 100.8 m (331 ft) and West Sheshan has an elevation of 97 m (318 ft); there is a small valley between them.

The Sheshan Basilica, officially the National Shrine and Minor Basilica of Our Lady of Sheshan (Chinese: 佘山進敎之佑聖母大殿; pinyin: Shéshān jìnjiào zhī yòu shèngmǔ dàdiàn) and also known as Basilica of Mary, Help of Christians is a prominent Roman Catholic church in Shanghai. Its common name comes from its location on the western peak of Sheshan Hill, located in Songjiang District, to the west of Shanghai's metropolitan area.
