South Carolina ( (listen)) is a state in the Southeastern United States and the easternmost of the Deep South. It is bordered to the north by North Carolina, to the southeast by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the southwest by Georgia across the Savannah River.South Carolina became the eighth state to ratify the U.

South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union in December 1860, and was one of the founding member states of the Confederacy in February 1861. The bombardment of the beleaguered U.S. garrison at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861 is generally recognized as the first military engagement of the war.

Old Shandon Historic District is a national historic district located at Columbia, South Carolina. The district encompasses 42 contributing buildings in a planned middle class residential development. They were built between the 1890s and 1950s, and the district includes examples of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Neoclassical Revival, and Craftsman/Bungalow style architecture.
