The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian national public universities. It was founded in 1948, in the British colony of the Gold Coast, as the University College of the Gold Coast, and was originally an affiliate college of the University of London, which supervised its academic programmes and awarded degrees.

Legon, a suburb of the Ghanaian city Accra, is situated about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) north-east of the city center in the Accra Metropolis District, a district in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. Legon is home to the main campus of the University of Ghana. Ghanaians loosely refer to the University of Ghana simply as "Legon".

Akuafo Hall otherwise referred to as the Hall of Excellence is the second Hall of residence to be established in the University College of the Gold Coast now University of Ghana. The Hall has its own statutes governing the administration of its affairs while the affairs of students are organized and supervised by Executives of the Junior Common Room.

The Balme Library established in 1948 is located on the main campus of the University of Ghana.The Balme Library was named after David Mowbray Balme, the first Principal of the University of Ghana.In addition to various libraries in Schools, Institutes, Faculties, Departments and Halls of Residence of the University, most of which are autonomous, the Balme Library forms the University's Library System.
