Around the Oise

Cergy (French pronunciation: ​[sɛʁ.ʒi]) is a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 27.8 km (17.3 mi) from the centre of Paris, in the "new town" of Cergy-Pontoise, created in the 1960s, of which it is the central and most populated commune.Although neighbouring Pontoise is the official préfecture (capital) of the Val-d'Oise département, the préfecture building and administration, as well as the department council (conseil général), are located inside the commune of Cergy, which is regarded as the de facto capital of Val-d'Oise.

Cergy-Pontoise (French pronunciation: ​[sɛʁʒi pɔ̃twɑz]) is a new town and an agglomeration community in France, in the Val-d'Oise and Yvelines departments, northwest of Paris on the river Oise. It owes its name to two of the communes that it covers, Cergy and Pontoise. Its population is 199,143 (2012), in an area of 84.2 km2.

Neuville-sur-Oise is a commune in the northwest suburbs of Paris, France. It is located in the "new town" of Cergy-Pontoise, created in the 1960s.Neuville-sur-Oise is a rather anonymous village between Jouy-le-Moutier and Cergy inside the last meander of the River Oise. Forty years after the creation of Cergy-Pontoise, the village has retained its bucolic atmosphere and there has been little construction of large scale residential developments.

Ham is a small village to the south of Cergy. The village used to be part of the Sergentery and then commune of Neuville-sur-Oise but has since been amalgamated in the commune of Cergy.It is situated on the southern side of the River Oise and is linked to Cergy by a one way bridge. The area is rather flat as it is inside the last meander of the river.

Vauréal is a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 30.6 km (19.0 mi) from the center of Paris, in the "new town" of Cergy-Pontoise, created in the 1960s.French chocolate maker Henri Menier (1853–1913) had a château in Vauréal and named the 70-metre-high Vauréal Falls on Anticosti Island in Quebec province of Canada after the town.
