Walkers can commence in the Car Park for Smardale Gill Nature Reserve and walk East towards Waitby rather than West to the Gill. Walk follows the old railway line towards Kirkby Stephen. There are two missing bridges over the roads North of Waitby where you have to descend to road level. (Quote steep). I turned back at second missing bridge but the walk can continue towards Kirkby Stephen and eventually leads to a second nature reserve and you can join to road from Kirkby Stephen to Waitby near Gale Bars and Bloodybones Lane
