It gives its name to the Borough of Pendle. It is an isolated hill in the Pennines, separated from the South Pennines to the east, the Bowland Fells to the northwest, and the West Pennine Moors to the south.

The village lies between Black Moss Reservoirs and Ogden Reservoirs, and is inside of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).The village is situated close to Pendle Hill, and is a popular starting point for walkers of this hill.

Pendle Water is a minor river in Lancashire.Rising on Pendle Hill, Pendle Water cuts a deep valley between Barley Moor and Spence Hill where it feeds into the Upper and Lower Ogden Reservoirs. Upon exiting the lower reservoir, Pendle Water flows east through the picturesque villages of Barley and Roughlee, before collecting Blacko Water, which drains the valley at Water Meetings near Wheathead, a popular picnic spot one mile west of Blacko village.

To the west of Barley is Pendle Hill; its summit, at 557 metres (1,827 ft), is within the parish.

Upper and Lower Ogden Reservoirs are half a mile to the west of the village of Barley, in the Borough of Pendle, England. They supply drinking water to the town of Nelson.Three forests covering more than 23 hectares (57 acres) can be found close to the reservoirs. Fell Wood, which is the largest, was planted in 1931 and contains Norway Spruce (Picea abies), Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis), Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) and European Larch (Larix decidua).
