Routen Details
The route starts and ends at the parking lot by an overlook with beach access along the Patuxent River. Although there are several trails available, this route traces the Perimeter of the park and provides the best overview of all terrain types. The route is good for beginners, with only a few moderate changes in elevation. It provides a well-shaded route through oak, cedar, holly, and other deciduous woods, with scenic vistas of the river, a creek, marsh, and the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. Parts of the route are improved (old road beds through what was a large farm) and parts are more rustic. The park is home to a nesting pair of osprey, although you are just as likely to see bald eagles along the Patuxent. Bring a camera, and take time to step off the path and enjoy the view at any of the many bluffs overlooking the beach and river below.
