There is a circular route which encompasses the lake, closed for part of the year as a bird sanctuary. As of March (I think) it is open to the public, with walks and sailing permitted. Great little sailing club catering for beginners and races for those more adept. Walkers, joggers, cyclist...there is a clearly marked path all the way round which takes roughly an hour. However, if the water level gets very high it can get muddy in certain areas and the is a tiny ford to cross-welly boots handle this easily. Lots of lake birds and wildlife, with a river running along side. I have seen many a heron, goose, coot, muntjac deer, rabbit and even an otter once. Seagulls, ducks and even the odd buzzard and red kite keep you company. A favourite walk of mine-recommended to all, although no cafe (unless a member of the thrapston sailing club).
