During those inevitable stretches when your daily steps are getting stale, try giving your eyes a worthwhile task. Purslane is a common weed that can be found on lawns and in beds all over the world. Most gardeners think nothing of pulling out and discarding this creeping menace. What most don't realize is that this weed is classified as a super food. It's high in a full range of vitamins and minerals as well as containing more Omega 3 fatty acids than most fish. The tender leaves and top stems are delicious in or as a salad. It's got a mild flavor with pleasing crunch. A forager at my local farmer's market sells it for $16 for 1/4 lb.! I picked 2lbs. During my afternoon walk around town. Made a great addition to tonight's salad. Have a safe weekend Pacers!

Thursday’s steps. Just returned from entrusting my daughter to the care of University of Miami. We stayed at the magnificent Biltmore Hotel, which was less than 5 miles from campus. Having lived in North Miami at one time, I was never aware of the stark contrast of landscapes covering such short distances in S. Florida. Coral Gables is home to an amazing variety of Banyan trees. Returning home, I somehow imagined that being an empty nester would feel better than this. What a naive fool I am. I’m reminded at every turn that somethings missing. As irritating as my daughter could be at times, I feel like I’m mourning the loss of a limb. I can’t figure out where the time went.

Third straight day with 30K + steps. First time that’s happened in six months. I miss my immortal 20s, when recovery from anything took 3 days. These days, 3 months is a miracle. 6 months is business as usual. In all fairness, considering that time gets shorter as you get older, shouldn’t it be the other way around?!

Four months since I got COVID, and I’m finally starting to feel like my stamina is back to where it was BC. Recovery hasn’t been a straight trajectory though. Feels some days like I’m pushing a boulder up hill. Key has been not missing a day no matter what. Not having a car since my last lease ended at the start of lock down 16 months ago, was an unexpected blessing. It forced me to routinely walk everywhere. Finally took the plunge and got a new car. It’s up to me to make sure that my new wheels don’t become my new legs!

Saturday’s steps. Hard to believe that it’s almost 5 months since I had 30K steps. That had been my daily average for the last couple of years. An important lesson learned from the COVID era is that progress takes many forms. After getting sick with this virus at the end of March, 3K steps felt like a triathlon for the longest time. When I finally broke 10K steps, it felt like I hit a new PR. As with anything in life, how well I do on any given day is secondary to the act of just doing, without missing a day. Have a great Sunday all…
