Aside from the flatirons, these two rock features are some of Boulder’s more prominent. The spire on the right is called Devil’s Thumb and the outcropping on the left is The Apostle. These are world class climbing formations but they’re closed to climbers most of the summer to preserve habitat for raptors and bats. Did I just say bats?

In the spring, the city allows the adjacent rancher to graze his cattle (and their calves) on the open space land. They cut back on the grass and seem especially to enjoy the invasive species. This cuts back somewhat on the risk of wildfire and lets the natural grasses grow. But the cows make a mess and the dogs are scared of them!
